US Male - Jerry Reed

Elvis recorded two of Jerry Reed's songs, Guitar Man and US Male and played on Jimmy Reed's Big Boss Man in 1967 / 8 sessions and later "A Thing Called Love" in 1970 and "Talk About The Good Times" in 1973

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Reed
"Jerry Reed Hubbard (March 20, 1937 – September 1, 2008), known professionally as Jerry Reed, was an American country music singer, country guitarist, session musician, songwriter, and actor who appeared in more than a dozen films. As a singer, he was known for "(Who Was the Man Who Put) The Line in Gasoline"; "Lord, Mr. Ford (What Have You Done)"; "Amos Moses"; "When You're Hot, You're Hot," for which he received the Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance in 1972; and "East Bound and Down," the theme song for the film Smokey and the Bandit, in which he also co-starred."

The story of Guitar Man and how Elvis came to recorded with Jerry on guitar is in another post but Jerry was asked if he had another composition Elvis could record and US Male was recorded at a later session than Guitar Man in January 1968 alongside Chuck Berry's Too Much Monkey Business on which Jerry Reed also played guitar.

" According to Jerry Schilling, Elvis started getting frustrated and angry when he couldn't find anything suitable to record, (After recording three songs; 'Too Much Monkey Business', 'Goin' Home' and 'Stay Away') and it wasn't until Chip Young asked Jerry Reed to play Elvis his talking blues, 'U.S. Male', that they were able to get back to work.

In an interview in 2005 Jerry Reed stated that it was steel guitarist Pete Drake who urged him to pitch another song to Elvis.

Robert Matthew Walker in ELVIS PRESLEY - A Study in Music said of US Male " In US Male, Presley is again out of touch with contemporary thought. This is full of male chauvinism and sung in a style that does not come off, although it was a hit."

However the 'US Male' had some interesting Alternate Takes -
